The Castle of Santa BárbaraThe fabulous Castle of Santa Bárbara, located on the top of Mount Benacantil overlooking the historic town, the port and the Bay of Alicante, is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain.
At the top of Mount Benacantil, at almost 200m above sea level, we find the Santa Bárbara Castle overlooking the Bay of Alicante which has become a symbol of the city. From the top you can enjoy exceptional views of the bay, the harbor and the city of Alicante.
Mount Benacantil has witnessed the passage of the different civilizations that have inhabited these lands. The origins of the castle date back to the 9thcentury in full Muslim domination until in 1248 when Alfonso de Castilla, future King Alfonso X, took over the castle and became a Christian fortress.

The fortress is divided into three areas; la Torreta, el Macho del Castillo and Salón Felipe II in front of Patio de Armas. We must highlight the Macho del Castillo area with its large open area from where the whole city is dominated with their defensive cannons and also the area below Salón Felipe II, the guardroom, Ermita de Santa Barbara and the dungeons.
In the castle itself, we find the Museum of the city of Alicante, a fantastic journey through the history of the city through the 10 rooms collecting moments and important themes in the history of Alicante. We will find from exhibitions of archaeological materials, passing by reminders of the influential personalities of the city, handcrafted remnants or audio-visual exhibition. The Museum opens daily 10 at 14.30 h and 16 to 20 h. It has a charge of 2.70. €
How to get to the Santa Bárbara Castle?
Santa Bárbara Castle is located in the heart of Alicante, about 160 meters on top of a rocky mountain. The fortress can be accessed on foot, through various inputs such as the ones of Postiguet Beach that leads to the Castle through an elevator, but it is also accessible by car or on the Turibus.
