Playa Levante - Santa Pola

Playa Levante - Santa Pola (Blue Flag since 1987)

This beach has been awarded in the thematic distinction of "Breaking architectural barriers and attention to people with disabilities" by the Foundation for Environmental Education in Europe (FEEE).

At the end of the 19th century, this beach became a makeshift yard for the construction of fishing boats.

In the year 1900, the English navy ship "Theseus" anchored in the bay of Santa Pola, whose mission was to make observations of the total solar eclipse which took place on May 28 of that year. On board were the English and Scottish astronomical commissions, which had all the municipal facilities to carry out their work. In their free time, Teseo's staff played a game called football on the Levante beach, in front of the waiting gazes of the Santapoleros. For this reason, Santa Pola is said to have been the first place in the Valencian Community where football was introduced and spread.

Santa Pola then had 4,100 inhabitants and this beach was the favorite of the population. Along with trade and fishing, tourism was beginning to make its mark: the holidaymakers of Elche, the La Sirena spa, the shacks near the beach, the Theater and the Casino tell of the beginnings of an incipient tourism.
