LA SIERRA E IL CAPO

LA SIERRA E IL CAPO

The mountain range is a cliff formation that rises to 144 m. above sea level. In its foothills is the cape that marks the end point of the bay of Alicante. At its highest point is the Torre VigĂa Atalayola, the current lighthouse. This space is of great environmental relevance, as it is one of the few examples of a fossil reef on the Mediterranean coast, and is home to interesting vegetation and fauna.

Cape Santa Pola is a unique specimen in Europe of a fossil coral reef from the Messinian era, formed mainly by the remains of corals of the genus Porites, stromatolites and Halimeda algae.

At its base is a unique building from the beginning of the 20th century, the old Carabineros Barracks, known as the Torre d'en Mig, where 9 families of policemen stayed. This body had the mission of guarding the coasts and borders and was created "to wage war against smuggling, to prevent or vigorously attack it at its points of generation and pursue it in all directions until its extermination." Currently, its use is that of the Marine Research Center (CIMAR).
